HEREMA

The Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA) is the competent authority in Greece for the licensing and management of key energy resources and technologies for the country’s transition to a robust and sustainable energy system.

The Company’s mandate to build a bridge to a carbon-free future revolves around key pillars –including offshore wind farms (OWF)andcarbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. As such, HEREMA embarks on multi-faceted efforts to accelerate Greece’s energy transition and security.

In its critical role and capacity HEREMAhas issued, to great international acclaim, Greece’s Draft National Programme for Offshore Wind Farms and awarded the first relevant research licenses, while also spearheading CCS projects.

In addition, the Company collaborates with esteemed partners for the implementation of clean energy initiatives, such as the project Review of Norwegian Oil & Gas Industry’s Transformation during the Energy Transition and its Application to Greece. Launched in 2021, the project is funded by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 (EEA Grants Greece) and supported by the Norwegian Embassy in Athens.

This bilateral collaboration aims to explore how energy-related activities in Greece can be supplemented with “green” and hybrid solutions, with a particular focus on offshore wind and CCS – areas in which Norway carries extensive expertise and is considered global. The project includes:

  • A comprehensive review of the transformation of the Norwegian energy sector and subsequent assessment of how relevant methods can also be applied to Greece.
  • Working meetings with SINTEF, one of Europe’s largest independent scientific and research organizations to share information, connect with local stakeholders, and promote the project’s activities and opportunities.
  • Visits to Norway to discuss know-how, strategies, and best practices for the implementation of offshore wind and CCS projects, and witness first-hand developments in the country’s energy transition.
