PREVENT- Youth violence among peers: Motives, causes and prevention techniques

The Smile of the Child is implementing the PREVENT project – Youth Violence among Peers: Motives, Causes and Prevention Techniques– funded by the EEA Grants Bilateral Relations Fund through the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The project is carried out in collaboration with Nord University (Norway) and the Commissioner of the Icelandic Police (Iceland) as donor country partners.

Project Objectives:

  • Assessing needs, gaps, and existing policies on youth violence in Greece, Norway, and Iceland.
  • Training caregivers and professionals (social workers, psychologists, teachers) who support adolescents with a history of abuse and psychosocial difficulties, to improve case management and prevention strategies.
  • Facilitating knowledge exchange on prevention strategies with experts from Norway and Iceland, enabling mutual sharing of best practices with social services, NGOs, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Providing information on juvenile delinquency legislation in Greece and the available measures for prevention and intervention.
  • Developing a targeted prevention education program to address peer violence, which will be implemented by “The Smile of the Child” professionals in schools, engaging students, parents, and teachers beyond the project’s duration.

To ensure a holistic and multidisciplinary approach, an Interdisciplinary Committeewas established, comprising representatives from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, juvenile probation officers, police units for the protection of minors, social services, and child protection NGOs. The committee’s role is to enrich the educational tools with diverse perspectives while maintaining a child-centered focus.

During the project’s final event, professionals from organizations across Europe, including donor countries, presented prevention strategies to tackle youth violence and bullying, fostering further dialogue and collaboration on this critical issue.
