“We are proud of our own work”
*The phrase “Amaro Magipé” in Romani language has the meaning of our own work, of the pride for our own achievement.
The Project aims to empower and involve Roma women and youth in activities and trainings aimed at socialization, skills development, awareness, violence prevention, psychosocial support and empowerment in general. In particular, the youth group aims to develop mentors who will work in their communities by highlighting and solving long-lasting problems that torment Roma people.
The area of action will include the settlement of Pelekas in Katerini, Dendropotamos, and the Municipality of Pavlos Melas in Thessaloniki and Drosero in Xanthi.
The Project’s team of experts will organize discussions and awareness-raising activities on perinatal care and parenthood issues. Similar consultations will target gender equality, gender-based violence, the importance of education in the lives of children and young people, early marriage, and school drop-out. Parents with babies and toddlers up to 2 years of age will also be offered counselling on child nutrition and parenting. In parallel with women’s activities, a creative activity space for toddlers will also operate in the Drosero Xanthi.
During the Project, events and information meetings will be held with institutions, schools, universities, NGOs, and non-Roma population, in order to disseminate the results and fight stereotypes that will help the contact and collaboration of the populations in the communities and their smooth inclusion in the society.
The project is supported by the Community Centers of Katerini, the Municipality of Ampelokipoi-Menemeni, and the Municipality of Pavlos Melas.
A few words about the partners of SolidarityNow:
The youth Center “Lighthouse of the World” is a place of protection and creative employment for the youth of Dendropotamos. Through its constant and unremitting struggle, it has not only highlighted the problems of the region but has found innovative solutions in areas such as education, health, and employment. The “Lighthouse of the World” is constantly by the side of all those who need it and illuminates the path to development and evolution. https://farostoukosmou.com/en/home/
The Cultural Association of Roma Women of Drosero Xanthi “ELPIDA-HOPE” is a Non-Governmental Organization founded in June 2006, on the initiative of 20 Roma women. The desire and need of these women were to create an institution through which they could express themselves collectively as Roma women, with rights and obligations within the Greek society. https://drosero.eu/
